Hardy, Professor Director, Aquaculture Research Institute University of Idaho Aquafeeds have always contained plant proteins • Plant proteins have been included to.. – Maintain protein levels in feeds and lower cost – Add specific nutrients or compounds • Ground whole grains, flours or starches have been included as nutritional binders, as expanders to allow more oil addition, and to control pellet buoyancy. • It is relatively easy to supply up to half of dietary protein from plant proteins and maintain fish performance/health • Given the finite global supply of fishmeal and predicted growth of aquaculture in the future, we all assume that there will be less fishmeal and more plant proteins in future aquafeeds. Fishmeal and fish oil use in aquafeeds • Capture fisheries landed 92.0 mmt in 2006 – 58.7 mmt for direct consumption – 26.6 mmt to fishmeal and oil – Remainder used directly in farm-made feeds • 5.6 mmt of fishmeal and 944,000 mt fish oil produced in 2006 – Aquafeed consumed 3.724 mmt FM and 835,000 mt of fish oil – Equivalent to 66.5% of FM and 88.5% of fish oil produced in 2006 From FAO 2008 Inputs and Outputs: wild fish to farmed fish ratios • Aquaculture produced 23,850,000 mt of food fish • Aquafeed used to produce fish was 25 mmt • Aquafeed used 3.724 mmt FM and 835,000 mt fish oil • This required 26.6 mmt of landed forage fish • Across all finfish aquaculture, the percentage of fishmeal was ~15% • Ratio of wild fish used to farmed fish produced was 1:1.1 From FAO 2008 Aquafeed production is increasing Amount of fishmeal used in aquafeeds has also increased Percentage of fishmeal across all aquafeeds ~ 15% At some point in the future demand for fishm
