Antibiotic Prophylaxis In Elective Hysterectomy;AIM;MATERIALS AND METHODS;MATERIALS AND METHODS;DURATION OF ANTIBIOTIC PROPHYLAXIS;DIFFERENT ANTIBIOTICS USED FOR PROPHYLAXIS;DIFFERENT ANTIBIOTICS USED FOR PROPHYLAXIS;DIFFERENT ANTIBIOTICS AND THE DURATION OF PROPHYLAXIS;DIFFERENT ANTIBIOTICS AND THE DURATION OF PROPHYLAXIS;15 Dec.2001;15 Dec.2001;15 Dec.2001;15 Dec.2001;Summary;So this study was undertaken to investigate the various antibiotic prophylaxis in elective hysterectomies as practiced at m.K.C.G.Medical college and evaluate their relative effectiveness. ;During the period of study, the 225 patients undergoing elective hysterectomy were included in this uncontrolled, randomised study without bias. ;It was observed that as many as 13 types of antibiotic prophylaxis were used in these patients for varying durations of two to seven days ;The various postoperative infective complications observed were pyrexia-8%, Thromboplebitis-2.2%, wound sepsis-1.78%, urinary tract infection-1.78% and respiratory tract infection-0.89%. ;Infective complications were independent of the type and duration of antibiotic prophylaxis. ;It is concluded that the cheap and simple antibiotic prophylaxis of TINIDAZOLE 2gms given orally 12 hours before, and CIPROFLOXACIN 200mg. Iv, 12 hourly for 48 hours started at the time of induction of anaesthesia is as effective as any other antibiotic prophylaxis. ;Thank you
