Abstract Abstract The ocean is the base for human survival and development. In order to exploit ocean, many countries strengthen the ocean development strategy continuously and use technology to exploit ocean resources. Underwater wireless sensor network （UWSNs ） is the solution to explore the underwater environment and acquire information. First of all, the system architecture of UWSNs was discussed in this paper. The topology for UWSNs was bulit taking Ad hoc network topology as a reference. The hierarchical structure and management platform in network protocol stack were studied. Underwater acoustic channel has the following features ：long propagation delays， low available bandwidth，high bit error rates. The paper analyzed these factors that impact on the UWSNs and calculated the bit error rate refer to the classical sonar equation . The relationship between bit error rate and transmission distance, which was an important performance index of the system, was obtained through the simulation with different parameters such as working frequencies and transmission power. To counter the characteristics of underwater acoustic channel , the design for MAC layer protocol was discussed in this paper. Some representative MAC protocols that were proposed recent years for underwater sensor networks were briefly introduced. Various types of multiple access technology must be improved according to different use. The design of MAC layer protocol for UWSNs also should be in the light of the multiple access technology. In
