The UK and EU • The European Union (EU) is an economic and political union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe. • The EU traces its origins from the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) and the European Economic Community(EEC), formed by the Inner Six countries in 1951 and 1958, respectively. The Maastricht Treaty established the European Union under its current name in 1993. • The founding members of the Community were Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, th herlands, and West Germany. • EU policies aim to create a single market and to ensure the movement of people, goods, services, and capital within the market. UK’sattitude toward EU • 1. At the beginning, skeptical attitude to European integration. • 2. After the Euro was implemented, Britain favored the single market idea but was skeptical about Euro. • 3. the British public generally hold negative attitude toward a single European currency, despite that the number of people who supported the EU reased.
