Quantumtechnologycouldcreatevalueworthtrillionsofdollarswithinthenextdecade.ThethirdannualQuantumTechnologyMonitorsynthesizesthelatestopportunitiesinthisburgeoningfield.

Ayearofstrongfundingcoupledwithsturdyunderlyingfundamentalsandsignificant

technologicaladvancesreflectedstrongmomentuminquantumtechnology(QT).

UpdatedMcKinseyanalysisforthethirdannualQuantumTechnologyMonitorrevealsthatfour

sectors—chemicals,lifesciences,finance,and

mobility—arelikelytoseetheearliestimpact

fromquantumcomputingandcouldgainupto

$2trillionby2035(seesidebar“Whatisquantumtechnology?”).

Privateandcorporatefundingforquantumtechnologystart-upsinpursuitofthatvalue,

however,tookanotabledip.Investments

decreased27percentfromthepreviousyear,

withthebiggestdropinquantumsensingstart-ups.Thisdecline,however,wassmallerthanthe38percentdeclineinallstart-upinvestment

worldwide.Notably,themajorityoffunding(62

percent)wenttocompaniesfoundedfiveormore

yearsago,reflectingashiftininvestmentstoward

more-establishedandpromisingstart-ups,witha

focusonscalingthem.

Incontrasttotheprivatesector,public

investmentsincreasedmorethan50percentover

2022,makingupalmostathirdofallinvestments

inquantumtechnology.Arangeofcountries,led

byGermany,theUnitedKingdom,andSouth

Korea,haveannouncedsignificantnewfunding

forQTdevelopment,bringingtheglobalpublic

fundingtotaltodatetoabout$42billion.

Underscoringthismomentumwascontinued

stronggrowthinQTfoundations.Therewasa
