Hisfather gave him a bag of nails and told him that every timehe lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back ofthe fence. Pre-writing The first day, the boy hammered so many nails into the fence that his father had to give him a whole new bag. Over the next few weeks, as he learnt to control his anger, he hammered fewer and fewer nails into the fence each day. He had learnt that it was easier to hold his temper than to hammer nails into the fence. Finally, the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper all day, not even once. He told his father, who said that now the boy should pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper.Read the story and answer the questions. Pre-writing The days passed by and the boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son and led him to the fence. He said, “You’ve done well, son, but look at all the holes in the fence! That fence will never be the same. When you say something in anger, it leaves a hole in someone’s heart, just like your nails have left holes in the fence. It doesn’t matter how many times you say sorry.
