2 LINKER Overview .DXE The linker links object and library files to produce executable files ( ), .SM .OVL shared memory files ( ), and overlay files ( ). You can run the linker from the VisualDSP++ Environment or from an operating system com- mand line. This document contains the following information on the linker: • “Linker Guide” on 11—describes how to use the linker for producing executable files • “Linker Command Line Reference” on 22—lists linker com- mand line switches and syntax • “Linker Description File Reference” on 33—describes linker description file syntax and programming techniques • “LDF Programming Examples” on 74—provides a series of LDF programming examples for different types of systems • “Linker Glossary” on 110—provides definitions of linker related terms Linker & Utilities Manual for ADSP-21xxx Family DSPs 2-1 Mapping Files To Memory: The Linker Description File Mapping Files To Memory: The Linker Description File Whether you want to link a C function or an assembly routine, the linking mechanism is the same. To map portions of code or data to specific mem- ory segments, you use a Linker Description File (LDF) to direct the linking operation. This section explains the overall function of the LDF. All projects must locate their code and data in the DSP ’s memory (inter- nal or external) to execute. Therefore, they must all specify the linking process with an LDF, even if you don’t include one. See “Default LDF and Object Code Placement” on 2, for a discussion of what hap- pens if there is no LDF included in your project. The LDF consists of Commands, specifying the relevant co
