INTRODUCTION What do you know about reference and bibliography? Reference, one the one hand, means generally any ideas or words quoted in a text/discourse to support or illustrate other ideas, or any books, materials that you could find information on a particular subject; on the other hand, it means a list of books, documents, articles, including their publication information, that has been cited in your paper/book, and that appears at the end of a paper or book. Bibliography refers to a list of reference materials appeared at the end your paper or book. This unit provides the rules for both reference acknowledgements inside a text and a bibliography list at the end of a research paper or book. Task 1 pp153-55 Read paragraphs a-f and understand the rules for references in a text. 1. REFERENCE INSIDE THE TEXT A. direct quotations take down exactly what the original like and enclose it in double or single quotation marks. Write inside brackets authors’ surname and publication year, page number the quotation from. B. indirect quotations give authors’ words in your own language without putting them inside quotation marks, and write inside brackets author’s surname and publication year of the source. Note 1: Slade: ‘direct quotations should be enclosed in double quotation marks’ (1997:58). But ELT Journal and Harvard system referencing all use single quotation marks. Whichever is chosen, be sure to keep consistent through out the entire paper. Questions: 1. Where should the reference given, i.e. before or after the quoted information? 2.
