IARCevaluation
AnIARCMonographsworkinggroupof25independentexpertsfrom12differentcountries,allassessedasfreefrom
conflictsofinterest,wasconvenedinLyonon6–13June2023.Theyreviewedallstudiesthathavebeenpublishedor
madepubliclyavailablerelatedtocancerinhumansandinexperimentalanimals,andtomechanisticevidenceregardingthekeycharacteristicsofcarcinogens.ThesestudieswerereviewedaccordingtothestrictscientificprocessdescribedinthePreambletotheIARCMonographs.
Theworkinggroupclassifiedaspartameaspossiblycarcinogenictohumans(Group2B)basedonlimitedevidencefor
cancerinhumans(forhepatocellularcarcinoma,atypeoflivercancer).Amongtheavailablecancerstudiesinhumans,therewereonlythreestudiesontheconsumptionofartificiallysweetenedbeveragesthatallowedanassessmentoftheassociationbetweenaspartameandlivercancer.Inthesestudies,consumptionofartificiallysweetenedbeverageswasconsideredagoodproxyforaspartameexposure,assupportedbyevidenceonthecountryandtimeperiodof
aspartameuseinbeverages.Inallthreestudies,apositiveassociationwasobservedbetweenconsumptionofartificiallysweetenedbeveragesandriskoflivercancer,eitheroverallorinimportantsubgroupsofthestudiedpopulations,but
chance,biasorconfoundingcouldnotberuledoutasanexplanationforthepositivefindings.
Therewasalsolimitedevidenceforcancerinexperimentalanimals.Therewasanincreasedincidenceoftumoursintwospecies,mouseandrat,ofbothsexesseeninthreepublishedstudies.However,basedonconcernsoverthestudy
design,interpretationandreportingofdata,
