Introduction
Heapleachingisaminingprocesstoextractmineralsfromtheorebysprinklingaleachsolutionona
pile(heap)ofore.Astheleachingsolutionpercolatesthroughtheore,themineralsaredissolved
andthenlareextractedfromtheleachatecollectedatthebaseoftheheap.Thisprocessis
conceptuallydepictedinFigure1.

Thecementoftheorecanresultinsegregationandstratificationoflayerswithdifferenttextures.
Thisvariabilityintextureinfluencestheflothsoftheleachingsolutionandhasaneffectonthe
amountoftheleachingsolutionretainedorreleasedbytheoreastheapplicationratechanges.The
objectiveofthiampleistoillustratehowSEEP/Wcanbeusedtostudytheprocessesobservedin
heapleaching.
