—Extremeweatherevents,liketherecord-breakingheatwavesinPhoenix,Arizona,andtheextremeprecipitationintheSindhprovinceofPakistan,arebecoming

increasinglycommonincommunitiesaroundtheworld.Whilehumanityhaslongadaptedtovariousclimaticconditions,climatechangeishappeningfaster

todaythanbeforeandisgivingrisetoconditionsthatcouldthreatenthehabitabilityofsomeoftheplanet’smostpopulatedareas.

—Giventhemagnitudeandsystemicnatureoftheimpactsofclimatechange,the

publicsectorhasaleadingroleinpropellingadaptation.Sixty-fivepercentof

theworld’scountrieshavealreadydevelopedatleastaninitialnationaladaptationplan,covering61percentoftheworldeconomyand65percentoftheworld

population,asofJuly2023.Oftheremainingglobalpopulation,almostathirdlivesinNigeria,Pakistan,andtheUnitedStates,whicharecurrentlydevelopingtheir

firstnationaladaptationplans,andinIndia,whereclimateadaptationisprimarilyrealizedthroughasystemofstateplans.

—Still,muchmoreremainstobedone.Eventhoughtheimplementationrateof

theseplansisincreasing,manylackcriticaldetailsandarenotkeepingupwiththerapidevolutionofclimateimpacts.Theclimatefutureisuncertain,andtheimpact

ofwarmingwillnotbelinearandwillbedifferentfromplacetoplace.Thisrequirespublicpolicyplannerstobeflexible,regularlyexplorearangeofclimateoutcomes,anddeterminethelevelofclimaterisktheywanttopreparefor.
