Aspartofaninvestigationofnewcathodematerialsforintermediatetemperaturesolidoxidefuel
cells,wehaveinvestigatedseveralperovskiteoxideswithcobaltionsontheBsitesinbothbulkand
thinfilmforms.OfparticularinterestisthecompositionLa0.5Sr0.5CoO3-x(LSCO)whichhas
exceptionalpropertiesforoxygenreductionatintermediatetemperaturesinceriabasedfuelcells.
ThinfilmsofLSCOweredepositedonbothsidesofadensepolycrystallinegadoliniadopedceria
substratebypulsedlaserdepositionunderconditionsthatleadtotheformationofnanocrystalline
films.Theelectrochemicalpropertiesforoxygenreductionweredeterminedinasymmetric
electrochemicalcellbyalternatingcurrent(AC)impedancespectroscopy.Theresultswereanalyzed
usingtheAdler-Lane-Steele(ALS)modeltoobtainthediffusionandsurfaceexchangecoefficients
andthethermodynamicfactor.Weshowthatthethermodynamicfactor,ameasureofhoweasyitis
tocreateoxygenvacancies,ismuchhigherthanobservedinconventionalcathodes.
