中国中部地区都市圈建设研究 Abstract Urbanization is one of the major drivers of economic growth and development in China. Over the last few decades, China has witnessed rapid urbanization, with large numbers of people migrating from rural areas to urban centers in search of better economic opportunities. This has led to the formation of urban agglomerations or city clusters which are important nodes of economic development. The Central Region of China has received significant attention in recent years, and various measures have been taken to boost economic development. This paper aims to explore the concept of urban agglomerations and its significance in the Central Region of China. It provides an overview of the urbanization trends in China and the factors contributing to the formation of urban agglomerations. The Central Region of China is then analyzed with regards to its potential for urbanization and the challenges that it faces. Finally, the paper proposes a framework for the development of urban agglomerations in the Central Region of China. Introduction China has been experiencing rapid urbanization in recent years with the number of people living in urban areas increasing from 17.9% in 1978 to 60.6% in 2019 (National Bureau of Statistics of China, 2020). This has led to the formation of large urban areas or agglomerations which contribute significantly to economic development. Today, China has over 20 urban agglomerations that are home to more than 100 million people. Urban agglomerations are defined as a group of cities and their surrounding areas that are integrated into a single economic unit through the flow of goods, people, and information (Wang et al., 2014). They are important centers of innovation, economic growth, and development because of the concentration of people, resources, and infrastructure.
