Communication Style
• Effective communication contributes to leader effectiveness

engages when in cting with followers
• Reflects the leader’s philosophical belief about human nature, or
• A strategy designed to ize es in a given situation

• Authoritarian:
• Maintains strict control over followers by directly regulating ,
procedures, and behavior
• Distanc ween leader and followers emphasizes role dist tions
• Effective followers require direct supervision to be productive
• Democratic:
• Engages in supportive communication facilitating in ction with followers
• Encourages follower involvement and participation determining goals and
procedures
• Followers are capable of making informed decisions
• Leader believes contributions of others improve overall quality of decision
making

Leadership
• Laissez-Faire:
• Non-leadership by abdication (“leavethem alone”)
• When ineffective it involves abdication of responsibility on the part of the
leader
• Leaders withdraw from followers
• Leaders offer little guidance or support
• When more positive, it affords followers a high degree of autonomy and self-
rule with guidance and support from the leader (when asked)
• Leaders providing Guided
• Do not directly participate in decision making unless asked
• Or participate if deemed necessary to facilitate task completion
