His works reveal the important transnational period in the American history, that is, from a rural to a predominantly industrial society.Anderson received little formal education.Chapter 26 Sherwood Anderson Chapter 26 Sherwood AndersonLife and Works Encouraged by Theodore Dreiser, Floyd Dell, Carl Sandburg, and Ben Hecht—leaders of the Chicago literary movement—he began publishing short stories in little magazines. Dell and Dreiser arranged the publication of his first two novels, Windy McPherson’s Son (1916) and Marching Men (1917), both written while he was still a manufacturer.In 1919, he published Winesburg, Ohio, his masterpiece, a collection of interrelated short stories of the “grotesque” characters he had known during his youth in Ohio.He died unexpectedly in Panama, on a trip to South America. His body was returned to the United States, where he was buried at Round Hill Cemetery in Marion, Virginia. In spite of his narrow writing scope, his sensitive depictions of poverty and eccentricity, and his deceptively simple style, with its Midwestern sentences, opened new perspectives for the literature of the 20th century.
