4-1 Pieces of Me One day, my mom and I were looking at our family pictures. “You look so much like your daddy when you smile,” Mom told me. “Really?” I said. “But I have your eyes, right Mom?” “That’s right.” A couple of days later, while I was practising my dancing, Mom said, “Did I ever tell you that my daddy owned a dance studio? I bet you get your grace and love of dancing from him.” Grandpa died before I was born. But after hearing my mom say this, I felt that I knew him better since we had something in common. “Who else am I like?” “Let’s see. You have a lovely singing voice like Uncle Kevin. And, you love girly things just like I did when I was your age.” “I like those pieces of me,” I said as I ran upstairs to sing to my dolls. I like that there are pieces of me that are all my own. But most of all, I love the pieces that I share with the people I love. 4-2 The Gift Today is Grandma’s 85th birthday. “I’m giving her a picture,” says Brian. “I took it with my new camera. What are you going to give her?” he asks his brother Joey. “I don’t know,” says Joey. “I don’t have a camera. So I can’t take a picture.” Joey goes into the kitchen. His mom is busy baking. “Mom, what are you giving Grandma?” “I’m baking her favourite cake,” says Joey’s mom. “I can’t bake cakes. I don’t know how,” says Joey. Joey goes to his sister’s room. She is busy sewing. “Susan, what are you giving Grandma?” “I’m making her a warm blanket,” says Susan. “I can’t sew blankets. I don’t know how,” says Joey. Joey then goes and sits next to Grandma on the couch. “Everyone has a present for you, but me. I can’t take a picture, bake or sew. I don’t have anything to give you,” says Joey. Grandma put her arm around Joey. “No one else has the time to come and sit with me. That’s what you can give me,” says Grandma.
