Unit Three A New Life on the University Campus LANGUAGE STRUCTURE PRACTICE Procedure 1. Have the students listen to the tape recording of the complete dialogues with their books shut and say after each of them at least twice. Then fill in the blank space in Student’s Book (SB) with the exact words they hear from the tape. 2. Discuss the key language points and structures. 3. Do substitution practice according to the pattern of the examples in SB by making full use of the given cues, e.g., A: Were you invited to the party the other day, Joan? B: Yes, I was. A: Were you asked to do anything? B: Yes, I was asked to tell a joke. A: Fran?oise and Hans were asked to perform a folk dance, weren’t they? B: No, they weren’t. A: What were they asked to do? B: They were asked to sing a duet. 4. Prompt the students to form dialogues different from the given pattern but still based on the given cues, e.g., A: How many of you were invited to the party last Saturday, Ali? B: Five, Joan, Isuzu, Fran?oise, Hans and I. A: Was Joan asked to do anything? B: Yes, of course. She was asked to sing a song. A: Were you and Hans asked to sing a duet? B: No, Hans didn’t sing a duet with me this time. He was asked to sing a duet with Fran?oise. A: Then what ere you asked to do? B: I was asked to play the piano. A: What about Isuzu, then? B: He was asked to tell a joke. Language Notes 1. The passive sentence is used when we are not so much interested in the doer of an action as in the receiver of the action. Very often in a passive sentence, the doer of an action is vague or unimportant or unknown, so it is often not explicitly stated. When the doer of an action is stated in a passive sentence, it is placed in a by-phrase. cf., Smoking is prohibited in the warehouse. Our classroom is cleaned everyday by two students on duty. The passive sentences given above are all in the simple present tense; the
