PART/01 Listening is an active, purposeful process of making sense of what we hear. (Helgesen, 2004) Listening is the process by which oral language is received, critically and purposefully attended to, recognized and interpreted in terms of past experiences and future expectancies. (Rost, 2011) Study the following definitions about listening and discuss in pairs what you can learn from them. 实用英语教学法教程 Chapter 12 12.1 The nature of listening PART/01 Listening is now more commonly seen as a process where the listener’s role interacts with the context of the listening. In this view, listening involves both active response to the communicative situation and ongoing interpretation by the listener. (Richard & Burns, 2014) Listening is not just hearing. It is an active process that may begin even before the first speech signal is recognized and it may go on long after the input or spoken information has stopped.
