He was generally recognized as an American literary pioneer. Dreiser’s career as a novelist began in 1900 with Sister Carrie, which he wrote in the intervals between work for various magazines. The novel tells of a small-town girl who moves to Chicago and eventually becomes a Broadway star in New York City. As a result of public outcry against the novel’s depiction of unrepentant and unpunished characters and for its frank treatment of sexual issues, the publisher withdrew the book from public sale. Dreiser’s second novel, Jenny Gerhardt, was published in 1911; his writings continued to excite controversy. In The?“Genius”, he presented a study of the artistic temperament in a mercenary society. This novel increased his influence among young American writers, who acclaimed him leader of a new school of social realism. Real fame came to Dreiser in 1925, when his An American Tragedy had great popular success.? There is a lot of naturalistic depiction in he works. Naturalism, the idea that all phenomena can be explained in terms of natural causes and laws, can be divided into two forms, methodological and metaphysical naturalism. It is not uncommon, however, for some to argue that this division is artificial and that there is no genuine separation between the two. Methodological naturalism is the basis of scientific work and is the process of assuming that natural explanations can be found for natural events. When operating under methodological naturalism, we act as if metaphysical naturalism is true without also asserting that it definitely is. Metaphysical naturalism is a stronger view which argues that nature is reality and that there is no reality beyond the physical, natural world?—no supernatural beings, no supernatural powers and no supernatural events.
